Trauma-Focused Partial Hospitalization Program

It can be difficult to find a way forward when grappling with the impact of trauma. You might be experiencing flashbacks, fear or a sense of isolation. These responses are a normal part of processing trauma but you don’t have to carry them alone.

PHP for Adults in Southern Massachusetts

Partial hospitalization programs (PHP) can offer daily therapy and behavioral health care without requiring overnight stays. Adult full-day outpatient programming is short-term and provides a structured environment where patients can address social, emotional and behavioral challenges. Patients go home each evening, which is part of what makes this level of care different from inpatient. PHP is intensive but it also gives people a chance to practice new skills in their real life almost immediately. Trauma-focused treatment helps patients learn how trauma lives in the body and mind. You can discover the triggers, the shutdown responses, the hypervigilance. Then, you can start building real tools to manage it. An hour of therapy a week can be a great long-term tool, but for an adult whose trauma symptoms are disrupting daily life, a once-a-week session may not offer enough support.

What to expect during PHP at Branches South Shore

PHP is a full-day adult program running Monday – Friday. You can attend in person at the Pembroke, Massachusetts location or virtually. (For patients attending PHP in person, lunch is provided.) A typical PHP day can include:

  • Psychiatric support when medication management is in addition to the whole picture
  • Group therapy where patients build skills alongside others who can relate to what they’re going through
  • Skill-building sessions focused on things like grounding techniques, emotional regulation and identifying triggers

Who benefits from trauma-focused mental health care?

Partial hospitalization is designed for adults whose trauma symptoms have reached a point where standard outpatient therapy isn’t providing enough support, but who don’t need 24-hour supervision. These symptoms can include flashbacks, panic, avoidance, emotional numbness and difficulty functioning day-to-day. It’s also a common and effective next step for someone stepping down from inpatient care. PHP gives them a structured bridge back into everyday life instead of a hard stop in treatment. Therapists also steadily help their patients build practical coping skills and emotional regulation strategies. Healing from trauma isn’t linear and it doesn’t happen on a set timeline. We can provide a safe, consistent space to do that work with people who are trained specifically to support it.

The work doesn’t end when the program does. A big part of what we focus on is ensuring patients leave with the tools to use in their everyday lives. We’re here to help you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
