Are You a Good Candidate for a Partial Hospitalization Program?

Deciding whether a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is the right level of care can feel confusing. Especially if you’re not sure how it compares to other types of mental health care, including inpatient care or weekly therapy.
PHP is Designed to Help Behavioral Health Patients
Partial hospitalization sits in the middle of the mental health care spectrum. It’s more intensive than traditional outpatient talk therapy, but it doesn’t require an inpatient hospital stay. Patients attend a full day of structured treatment but go home each evening. This structure makes it a strong fit for people who need more support than a weekly appointment but who are stable enough that they don’t need 24-hour supervision.
Signs partial hospitalization may be right for you
Outpatient therapy isn’t enough. Symptoms are getting worse, not better, even with regular sessions. Your therapist may recommend PHP as the next step in treatment.
Daily functioning is disrupted. Work, school or relationships are consistently affected by mood, anxiety or other symptoms.
Stepping down from inpatient care. PHP is often the next step after an inpatient stay, providing continued structure while easing back into daily life.
Motivation to engage in treatment. PHP works best for people who are willing and able to participate.
Sign you may not be a good fit for partial hospitalization
PHP isn’t designed for every situation. It’s generally not appropriate for someone who:
- Is in immediate danger to themselves or others and needs 24-hour monitoring
- Is not medically stable enough to attend a full day of programming
- Needs a higher level of structure than a day program can provide
In these cases, inpatient care is typically the safer and more effective starting point, with PHP available later as a step-down option.
Start with a confidential mental health assessment
Admission into the outpatient services starts with a confidential level-of-care assessment. A clinician talks through current symptoms, history, safety and daily functioning. Branches South Shore, partnered with Pembroke Hospital, accepts self-referrals from people seeking care for themselves, as well as referrals from partners. Therapists, primary care doctors, and psychiatrists often recognize when a patient needs more support than they can currently provide, and a direct referral helps make that transition smoother. Not every PHP looks the same, which is part of why getting the right fit matters. At Branches South Shore, we offer three distinct tracks so that treatment matches the person.
