Understanding Trauma and Its Signs
Trauma is an emotional and psychological response to deeply distressing experiences. It may stem from an accident, a natural disaster, a serious illness or the loss of a loved one. Other causes include experiencing abuse, neglect or violence.
If you are carrying the weight of these experiences, you might notice the following signs:
- Distressing memories: You may have recurrent, involuntary flashbacks or nightmares about the event. These memories can feel sudden and intrusive.
- Intense emotions: Feelings of intense fear, guilt or shame can arise unexpectedly. This emotional weight can make everyday activities challenging.
- Changes in behavior: Crying frequently or growing isolated from family and friends are common reactions. You might find it harder to connect with the people around you.
How the Trauma-Focused PHP Can Help
Healing takes time, and needing extra support is a normal part of the process. This full-day outpatient program provides a structured space for adults 18 and older to process trauma and build resilience.
The program typically runs for three weeks, meeting Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. To best meet your needs, you can attend in person at the Pembroke location or virtually. For patients attending in person, lunch is provided.
Key features of the program include:
- Group-based therapy: Connecting with others in a supportive space can foster healing, strength and courage. Sharing experiences can remind you that you are not alone.
- Evidence-based therapies: You can learn sustainable coping skills through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. These approaches help you manage and reframe distressing thoughts.
- Mental health support: The team provides mental health evaluations and medication management to support your overall well-being. This can help stabilize your moods as you process your experiences.
Steps toward your recovery
Building a foundation for recovery is a gradual process. Throughout your time in the program, you may experience:
- A renewed sense of stability: You can learn to re-establish feelings of stability in your daily life. This foundation helps you move forward with greater ease.
- Better emotional understanding: The program can help you identify potential triggers and understand how trauma affects the body. Recognizing these patterns is a helpful step in your recovery.
- Improved relationships: Rebuilding self-confidence often leads to healthier connections with friends and family. You may find it easier to communicate your needs to loved ones.
